The Island Government of La Palma has refurbished a series of buildings located at strategic points on the island, designed to act as a back up for hikers. These hostels will be operational as from 2010. The philosophy behind this new infrastructure is to offer hikers comfortable, functional accommodation and recover public buildings no longer in use. In these hostels, walkers will be able to rest or spend the night, as well as cook and wash clothes, without having to leave the path, since all are located near, or actually on, the hiking routes themselves.
This form of accommodation, aimed at the hiking sector, is a pioneer venture in the Canaries and complements the available offer on La Palma, as well as fomenting more independent hiking. Depending on demand and the results achieved, the number of establishments in the Network of Hostels is liable to increase in the future.
